Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about activating, using, billing, and troubleshooting your PetDentify smart NFC pet tag.
How do I activate my PetDentify tag?
Open the PetDentify app and add your pet's information, along with your contact information. Then, click the Write to tag button on the “About” page on your pet's profile. It will ask you to scan your tag, and once you do that you are all set!
How do I test that it’s working?
Hold your phone to the tag. When it reads the NFC chip, your phone will show your saved phone number for an instant call.
How do I attach the tag?
Clip the tag onto your pet’s collar. That’s it! You’re live once activation is complete.
What happens if someone finds my pet?
They tap their phone to the PetDentify tag and your phone number appears so they can call you immediately.
Do finders need to install an app?
No app is needed. A standard NFC-enabled smartphone is enough.
What phones can scan the tag?
Most modern iOS and Android phones support NFC tap.
Does the tag use GPS or require charging?
No. It’s a passive NFC tag, so there’s no battery to charge and it doesn’t provide live location tracking.
Can I update my phone number later?
Yes. Open your PetDentify profile to edit your contact number, then after you save your changes, re-scan the tags you want to change the phone number of using the Write to scan feature.
What personal info is shown to a finder?
The tag is designed to show the phone number you provided so they can reach you quickly.
Where should someone tap their phone on the tag?
On most iPhones, the NFC reader is near the top of the back; on many Android phones it’s around the center of the back. Ask the finder to touch the phone to the tag and hold for a moment.
Do phone cases or metal collars affect NFC?
Very thick cases, battery packs, or metal near the tag can reduce read range. Try removing the case or touching a different spot on the phone.
What’s the NFC read range?
Very close—typically within a couple of centimeters. Tapping or gently holding the phone against the tag works best.
How is this different from a microchip?
A microchip must be scanned by a vet or shelter to look up your info in a registry. The PetDentify tag lets someone contact you directly by tapping their phone—no special scanner required.
Is the tag okay in rain or at the dog park?
It’s designed for everyday use. Wipe clean with mild soap and water if it gets dirty; avoid solvents or extreme heat.
Can I clean or sanitize the tag?
Use a soft cloth with mild soap and water. Avoid alcohol, bleach, or abrasive cleaners.
Can I use tags for multiple pets?
Yes—there is no limit for how many pet profiles you can have.
Can I have more than one tag for the same pet?
Yes. Using the Write to tag feature, you can set up additional tags and attach them to different collars or harnesses if needed.
What if I need more than one tag?
Add as many extra tags as you need for $7.99 each.
What happens after the first year?
Your tag continues to work with the Annual Service Plan at $9.99/year (auto-renews unless you cancel).
My phone isn’t reading the tag—what should I try?
Make sure NFC is enabled on the phone and touch the upper/back area where the reader is located. Remove thick cases or try a different NFC-enabled phone.
I lost my tag—how do I get a replacement?
Order a new tag from Get your tag and activate it with your profile.
